The SpaceX Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship

Last Friday, SpaceX made history after successfully landing their Falcon 9 rocket on a football field-sized floating platform in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. A lot has been written about the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft, but there is a surprisingly scarce amount of information regarding the landing platform that made this aerospace-milestone possible. Let’s take a closer look at what we know about this mysterious vessel named, “Of Course I Still Love You”. Construction First of all, this landing platform has an official vessel designation as an Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship, or ASDS. The ASDS started out as a simple barge but was converted into one of the most sophisticated objects on the water. marmac 304 The barge is a Marmac 304 built by McDonough Marine Services in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. 2015 Year-End Summary

The nature of the surveying business provides me, and all surveyors, unique access and exposure to boating market trends and market data. Surveyors are typically on the forefront of new and evolving technologies, but more importantly, we have our finger on the pulse of the maritime economy. While emerging science is the driving force behind industry growth, economic conditions dictate how fast that growth occurs and for how long. So monitoring and analyzing economic conditions in this business is not only fascinating, but also necessary. If we can fully understand why, how and where the money is flowing, we can better understand where we are going as an industry, and how we can best position ourselves for the future. So where are we going? survey 2015 pic liftLast year I predicted that 2015 would be a good year for the boating industry. It turned out that...

2014 Year-End Summary

2014 was a year of growth in every sense of the word. After the 2nd full year of operation, there was an increase in survey volume, survey frequency, average vessel size, and vessel variety. Our Rolodex grew exponentially and more diverse as well. We nearly doubled out-of-state surveys and more than tripled international surveys (see stats below). I had the pleasure of working alongside legendary sailor Laurence Sunderland (sunyachts.com), and unknowingly conducted a pre-purchase survey for the President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto. Stats 59% of all surveys took place in South Carolina for South Carolina residents. 28% of the boats surveyed were shipped to out-of-state clients (14 different states), up from 16% in 2013. We also saw a substantial increase in international business, serving multiple clients from 6 different countries (Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Canada, Mexico, and Tonga). In total, international surveys represented 13% of all...
